Tragic Loss: Footballer ‘Chucho’ killed by crocodile while swimming in river, community unites in grief and support
Jesus Alberto Lopez Ortiz, a young footballer known as ‘Chucho’, tragically lost his life to a crocodile attack while swimming in Rio Cañas, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. Shocking images and videos captured the reptile carrying Chucho’s body in its mouth, and later, local residents chased the reptile in a canoe so they could kill it and retrieve the victim’s body. Chucho, a 29-year-old and a father of two, played for Deportivo Río Cañas.

Community Support for Chucho’s Family:
In the aftermath of this devastating incident on 29th July, the community rallied to support Chucho’s family by seeking help for his funeral expenses. His team manager, Luis Carlos Montes, is organizing a collection for the grieving family. However, killing of protected animals like crocodiles is prohibited by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, and the reasons for the attack remains unclear. The incident is under investigation.

midst the grief, a statement was shared on the team’s Facebook page, urging people to contribute to a designated sinpe number or provide physical aid to help Chucho’s family cope with the tragedy. The footballer’s club expressed their deep sorrow and joined in mourning his loss.
