A high-stakes extravaganza, the Paris Olympics opening ceremony united cultures from all over the world. Some, however, thought a certain section of it—which many saw as mocking Jesus Christ’s Last Supper—was disrespectful. French DJ and LGBTQ activist Barbara Butch served as the focal point of the Last Supper tableau. The tableau presents a modern version of the well-known “The Last Supper” artwork by Leonardo da Vinci. It had Butch at the head of a long table surrounded by more than twenty drag and dancer acts. Butch had on a silver headpiece that resembled a halo.

About Barbara Butch:
Within the LGBTQ+ community, Barbara Butch is well-known for her activism and DJing. She describes herself as a “love activist” and has accomplished a great deal to advance body acceptance, diversity, and inclusivity. “I am a love activist, DJ, and producer based in Paris,” she stated on social media, sharing a photo from her performance at the Paris Olympics. My goal is to use music to bring people together, gather people, and spread love so that we may all dance and feel our hearts beat in harmony! With all of us, the music sounds better!
Butch started her career as a musician in Montpellier, France, performing at pubs and parties under the stage name “Scratcheuse de gazon.” Later, she relocated to Paris, where she became well-known for her performances at the Machine du Moulin Rouge and Rosa Bonheur. In addition to her singing career, she is an activist lesbian. She has utilized her platform to question conventional notions of beauty and has been very vocal about accepting people who are overweight. The French Association of LGBTI Journalists has awarded her the Out d’or 2021 award for “LGBTI personality of the year” in recognition of her community service.
In order to promote body positivity, the artist has also been featured on the cover of Telerama magazine, where she is shown posing naked. She is now the face of La Belle Intense, a perfume by Jean Paul Gaultier. Butch was raised in a conventional Jewish home; her mother was connected to the Ashkenazi Jewish community in Europe.
