Australia vice-captain Alyssa Healy's WBBL season abruptly ends due to a finger injury sustained when her dog accidentally bit her, requiring surgery. Her recovery timeline is uncertain, impacting her availability for upcoming tours.
Alyssa Healy Undergoes Surgery on Injured Finger, Future Tour of India Hangs in the Balance Pending Rehab Progress
Sydney Sixers wicketkeeper and Australia vice-captain, Alyssa Healy, has received official confirmation of her unavailability for the entire WBBL season after consulting with her surgeon regarding the gruesome finger injury. Her journey to recovery becomes all the more critical as she strives to regain fitness in time for Australia’s multiformat tour of India scheduled for December. The unfortunate injury occurred when Healy found herself in a predicament last weekend. While attempting to separate her playful puppies at home, one of them accidentally bit her right index finger, resulting in a severe laceration. The injury was particularly concerning as it had severed an artery, necessitating surgical intervention. Fortunately, the injury did not involve any bone or tendon damage, offering a glimmer of hope for her timely return to international cricket.
Healy’s consultation with her surgeon on Thursday culminated in a disappointing verdict, and after discussions with Cricket Australia’s medical team, it was decided that she would be sidelined for the remainder of the WBBL, including any potential finals
Expressing her disappointment, Healy said, “This is not the news I was hoping for because I love playing in the WBBL and I love the Sydney Sixers. My focus now will be on making a full recovery and returning to play when the time is right. I’ll continue to spend time with the Sixers squad and offer any help I can to ensure the team and the club thrive for the rest of the competition. I’ll enjoy being able to watch the WBBL from afar as the tournament continues to go from strength to strength.”
With the WBBL season behind her, Healy’s sights are now firmly set on the tour of India scheduled for December and January. The timeline for her return to the playing field will be established over the next few weeks as she embarks on further rehabilitation. It’s worth noting that Healy has been Australia’s stand-in captain for a significant portion of this year, stepping into the role when Meg Lanning was ruled out of the Ashes series and also missed the recent series against West Indies.
The forthcoming India tour is set to commence with a Test match just before Christmas, followed by a series of white-ball fixtures, adding to the anticipation surrounding Healy’s recovery and potential participation.
