World Elephant Day!
World Elephant Day!
August 12 is celebrated as World Elephant day. It was founded by Canadian filmmakers Patricia Sims and Michael Clark in year 2011.
Main motive to celebrate this day is to create awareness about Asian and African elephants, which are on the verge of extinction due to poaching for the illicit ivory trade.
Elephants have traditionally been revered in East Asian culture. Used as beasts of burden, for war, Elephants have also enjoyed celestial roles – Airawat, the mythological White elephant, the vehicle of Hindu God Indra.
Also revered by hundreds of millions in his half Elephant half man form – Ganesha, the distroyer of all troubles, not only in India, but also Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Bali – Indonesia among other countries.
