Be gentle to your vagina. Here are 7 easy and simple steps to keep a check on your vaginal health.
1. Safely shave it: It is not really a question of hygiene when it comes to shaving or waxing your pubic hair. But if you are someone who prefers to be super clean down there, make sure you use clean razors and in case of any cuts contact your doctor immediately. Also, if you are waxing then double check the equipment being used.
Be sensitive while cleaning the hair.
2. Pap Smears: These are necessary for anyone who is sexually active between the age of 21-29, every 3 years. But older women between 30-65 years of age should get a HPV (Human Papillomavirus, causes cervical cancer) testing alongside their pap smear test, every 5 years.
3. Wash it regularly and carefully: Though those perfumed soaps and washes may seem tempting, they actually are not good for you. The best way to wash your vagina is water and a pH balanced vaginal wash like V wash.
4. Regularly visit your Gynae: If you are over 21 years of age, meet your gynaecologist annually just for a regular check up, to make sure that everything is in proper working order. You will be surprised at how important these visits are.
5. Wear Cotton panties: Cotton underwear may be a little ugly or ‘basic’ but it’s your vagina’s best friend. Comfy, cool and breathable, it’s exactly what you need. So go cotton or go commando, your choice. Always go for cotton panties.
6. Greek Yogurt: The non-sugary Greek yogurt has live cultures that helps boost the good bacteria in your vagina, so why not get snacking on something healthy? It also prevents yeast infections, which can make vagina smell bad.
7. Menstrual Hygiene: The most important step. Wash your hands as much as possible and keep yourself clean and dry, use vaginal washes during your periods as well. Change your pad every 4-6 hours.
Dr. Jyotsana Gupta, Gynae with an experience of 20 years advised on your vaginal health, “The smell indicates infection. You should better visit a doctor and get yourself checked. You can use vaginal wash till that time and take probiotics” .
Stay healthy!
