Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya faces execution in Yemen, India explores diplomatic efforts to save her life
India promises to back Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya in her fight to save her from execution in Yemen
Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, is facing execution in Yemen after being sentenced to death for the murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi. The incident, which occurred in 2017, involved Priya allegedly injecting Mahdi with a sedative to retrieve her passport, which he had seized. Tragically, the sedative proved fatal.
Priya was sentenced to death in 2018, and earlier this year, Yemen’s Supreme Court rejected her appeal. Recently, Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi approved her death sentence, with the execution reportedly scheduled within a month.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has pledged full support to save Priya. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We are aware of Ms. Priya’s sentencing in Yemen. The Indian government is extending all possible help to resolve the matter.”
Efforts to save Priya have been ongoing for years. Her family, particularly her mother Prema Kumari, has been fighting relentlessly. Prema traveled to Yemen to negotiate blood money with Mahdi’s family. This practice, common in Yemen, allows death sentences to be commuted if compensation is paid to the victim’s family.

However, the negotiation process faced several setbacks. Disagreements over fees demanded by the lawyer representing Priya caused delays. Despite some funds raised by the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, transparency concerns further complicated matters.
In 2011, Priya relocated to Yemen in pursuit of a better life. Because Yemeni law mandates that foreign nationals have local partners, she and Mahdi collaborated to open a clinic. Priya, however, claimed that Mahdi had extorted money, harassed her, and even falsified documents to prove he was her husband.

After years of abuse, Priya attempted to sedate Mahdi to retrieve her passport, leading to his death. She has been imprisoned since 2017.
The Indian government, along with organizations and activists, is exploring every possible option, including securing forgiveness from Mahdi’s family, to save her.
As time runs out, the case remains a race against the clock, with diplomatic and legal efforts underway to prevent the execution.
