Karthigai Deepam, Tamil Nadu’s sacred festival of lights, honors Shiva and Murugan with lamps, prayers
The vibrant festival of Karthigai Deepam is being celebrated today, December 13, 2024. This Hindu festival, mainly observed by Tamil Hindus, holds special significance at the Arunachaleswarar Temple in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan, Karthigai Deepam is seen as a representation of celestial illumination. When the full moon, Pournami, and the Karthigai Nakshatra (star) coincide during the Tamil month of Karthikai, it is celebrated.. According to Drikpanchang.com, the Karthigai Nakshatra began at 7:50 am today and will end at 5:48 am tomorrow, December 14, 2024.
The most notable celebrations occur at the Arunachaleswarar Temple during the 10-day Karthikai Brahmotsavam. The festivities begin with Dwajarohanam (flag hoisting) when the Uthiraadam star prevails, usually 10 days before Karthigai Deepam. The highlight is the lighting of the Maha Deepam on the hilltop after sunset.
Karthigai Deepam is preceded by Bharani Deepam, an early morning ritual performed before sunrise at 4 am. The flame for the Maha Deepam is taken from this Bharani Deepam. Devotees view the lighting of the Maha Deepam as a divine blessing and gather in large numbers to witness this sacred event.
The festival has deep roots in mythology. According to one legend, Lord Shiva appeared as an infinite flame to test Vishnu and Brahma, symbolizing his boundless power. Another story links the festival to Lord Murugan, born under the Krittika star, celebrating his wisdom and strength.
Traditions of Karthigai Deepam include lighting oil lamps, drawing kolams (rice flour designs), and preparing special dishes like puffed rice sweets with jaggery. Homes and temples are adorned with lamps, symbolizing the removal of darkness and negativity.
Devotees offer prayers, fresh flowers, and prasadam to Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan, seeking blessings for peace and protection. Observing fasts and sharing traditional meals with family and neighbors are integral to the celebrations, making Karthigai Deepam a festival of light, devotion, and togetherness.
