Boeing Suffers $125 Million Loss Due to Delayed Return of Astronaut Sunita Williams Amid Starliner Program Challenges
The rescheduling of the return of an Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams has had a hạt impact on Boeing, as the aerospace company determined its net loss at $125 mln in the second quarter of 2024. This decline is blamed on the extended duration it took to complete the Crew Flight Test (CFT) mission with the Starliner spacecraft, which is part of NASA’s push to ensure constant manned occupancy.

Cost overruns at Boeing are nothing new: The Starliner program has now cost Boeing a phenomenal $1. $6 billion since 2016, indicating that such practices remained prevalent. These financial issues are attributed to the struggle of competing with SpaceX’s more efficient and inexpensive Crew Dragon spacecraft. Boeing has continued to be plagued by issues in the Starliner program and this includes a flawed uncrewed test flight conducted in the last year of 2019. The most recent losses comprise $257 million written-off in the second quarter of 2023 due to the CFT mission’s extension to 2024.

NASA is now facing a possibility of overcrowding on the ISS especially as its readies to launch its next mission known as Crew-9 in August 18th. The ISS, which can only hold a maximum of three to six astronauts, might encounter issues with logistics, if Williams and her fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore are not brought back soon. At the moment, there are no definite dates that have been set for their operations, which compounded the issue surrounding Boeing’s problematic Starliner mission.
