Science Mega gets much needed boost in India

Amid the uproar over Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has come with good news for academics and scientists engaged in basic research, in the form of government approval for the creation of an observatory of gravitational waves in India.

The Union Cabinet on February 17 gave “in principle” good to the proposed LIGO-India to set up an observatory of gravitational waves Laser Interferometer (LIGO) in India as a part of the system of Advanced LIGO is set by the scientific consortium led by the United States, which made path breaking discovery of gravitational waves last week.

The first task of the Indian scientists would be to find a place of seismic activity and gravitationally stable in the country for the construction of the observatory will consist of 4 km long arms at right angles. Indian scientists are also responsible for the implementation of the facility, to be operated jointly by Indian and international consortia LIGO.
