Researchers unveiled 3D heart and liver tissue
Taking tissue engineering at a whole new level researchers have developed a new technology to build versions of models both for heart and liver tissue functioning as the real thing.
Layers, which resemble microchips, are stacked in the 3D structure of synthetic blood vessels. As each layer is added, the UV (ultraviolet) light is used to cross link the polymer and attached to the layer below.
When the structure is completed, it is bathed in a liquid containing living cells. The cells readily attach to the interior and exterior of the channels and begin growing as they would in the human body.
