Now tomato residues can generate electricity
The scientists, including one of Indian-origin, are developing a fuel cell-based biological or damaged tomato that uses waste to produce electricity.
The process also helps to purify contaminated tomato solid waste and associated wastewater.
Tomatoes are a key crop in Florida, said Venkataramana Gadhamshetty, professor at the School of Mines and Technology of South Dakota.
The team developed a microbial electrochemical cell that can explode tomato waste to generate electricity.
