Light- Activated Curtains

Light- activated Curtains is a new development by University of California, Berkeley. No batteries are needed for such as it moves in response to light. The material is made up of fabric with layered carbon nanotubes which is atom- thick rolls of carbon on to a plastic poly- carbonate membrane that moves quickly in response to light.

Within fraction of seconds, the nanotubes absorb light and transfer the heat to the polycarbonate membrane’s surface. The advantages of this new class of Photo- reactive Actuator is that it is very easy to make, and it is very sensitive to low- intensity light. The light from a flashlight is enough to generate a response. Besides, these are smart curtains that could help in cutting energy usage in half.Other potential applications include light- driven motors and robotics that move toward or away from light.
