I am a huge fan of Samsung’s latest crop of smartphones, so I was surprised to find myself impressed by a Lenovo offering that matches Samsung’s offerings at a lower price. Lenovo introduced a single-SIM version of the Vibe Z at the Consumer Electronics show, and this cool new smartphone is about to hit the market. Thin, light, and blazing fast, it will also sport a really great 13 megapixel dual-LED camera with an aperture stop of 1.8. That means sharp pictures with the blurry backgrounds favoured by professional photographers. The front-facing 5 megapixel camera is also more than adequate for crystal clear Skype sessions and crisp, detailed selfies that you may want to think twice about sharing with the world!
On the technical front, the phone’s 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor means the Vibe Z will zip through applications without hiccups and delays. With the Adreno 330 Graphical Processing Unit and full High Definition screen, 3D games and processor intensive graphics will be rendered instantly. 2 GB of RAM and 16GB of storage round out this capable phone’s offerings.

With a 5.5 inch screen, text and images are tack-sharp and very easy on the eyes. The screen is legible even at extreme angles, making it easy for several people to enjoy movies and images in rich, vibrant colours.
As far as software is concerned, the phone comes pre-loaded with Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean), and built-in apps from Lenovo address content-sharing (SHAREit), synchronization (SYNCit), and security measures (SECUREit). Multi-window is a breeze for supported apps, allowing you to resize the windows and work in two different apps side by side. Some people use this feature, others don’t. Personally, I absolutely love it. It allows me to check data online while talking to someone or texting them, or to display pricing information or news while also keeping an eye on incoming emails. Please don’t do this while driving, of course!
There are some innovative and unique software and hardware features. Some are more useful than others. I love the fact that the ringer becomes louder if the phone detects it is inside a pocket. You can also simply shake the phone to lock it. But I am not so keen on the phone’s ability to answer calls automatically if you pick it up and hold it against your skin. It will also dial a displayed number if you hold it up against your skin—I can see this leading to a lot of unintentionally answered and dialed calls. It’s easy enough to disable these features, so they don’t affect my hearty endorsement of this powerhouse.
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB, A-GPS and 3G connectivity is standard on the Lenovo Z Vibe.
Sleek and sophisticated, the phone is just 7.9-mm thick, and packs in a monster 3,000 mAh battery. This will give users 33 hours of talk time and 648 hours of standby time.
The phone comes in two casing colours: Titanium and Silver. Customers who buy it from Lenovo’s online store will also get a Rs. 2,039 smart touch cover for free. I heartily recommend it as a sound alternative to the advanced smartphones on offer from Samsung and other manufacturers.
