Knowing the genetic risk does not really help us!
Genetic tests that predict risk for disease people are becoming more common, but a recent study has suggested that having that information does not mean that people act on it.
The study by the University of Cambridge found that communication of the results of DNA testing has little or no impact on behavior of people , such as quitting smoking or increasing physical activity.
These results are timely given high levels of interest in personalized medicine and the increasing use of direct consumer testing for a number of common complex disorders.
They received the results of 18 studies on the effects of communication of estimates of genetic risk of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, so the change in behavior could reduce that risk.
