April 12 is observed worldwide as the International Day for Human Space Flight. In honor of the legendary Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin the day commemorates the first space flight and the first human in space. This momentous occasion gave humanity access to experiences never before possible. After Gagarin’s space flight interest in studying the cosmos and spaces was rekindled. The day also honors humanity’s incredible advancements in establishing a sustainable relationship with space and applying that knowledge to benefit all of our planet’s inhabitants. Background of International Day for Human Space Flight

The world as we know it changed forever on April 12 1961. This date marked the launch of Yuri Gagarin’s first human space flight. This event paved the way for space exploration that would benefit all of humanity and it was a remarkable day for human ingenuity and tenacity. The UN General Assembly recognized after Gagarin’s flight that advancing and extending the study and utilization of space was something that all of humanity was interested in.

But years before humans would make their way to space on October 4 1957 the first human-made satellite- Sputnik I- was launched into outer space. This event undoubtedly paved the way for space exploration and may have also planted the seeds for future human visits. Just a few years after people started using contemporary technology to study space Gagarin accomplished the incredible feat of becoming the first person to orbit the Earth on April 12 1961.

The United Nations General Assembly recounted Gagarin’s space voyage years later calling it an amazing history of human presence in outer space and the remarkable achievements since the first human spaceflight. . It should be mentioned at this point that Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to orbit the Earth when the Soviet Union launched her into space just two years later. Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the moon in July 1969 just seven years later. In July of 1975 the U. S. A. and the Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft were docked together by the Soviet Union initiating the first international human mission in space. Humanity achieved unprecedented advancements in space exploration in just 15 years.
