Ingredients

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 small carrot, diced
  • 1/2 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 medium potato, diced
  • 4-5 curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 4 cups water
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped for garnish

How to make?

  • Rinse the rice and moong dal thoroughly under running water until the water is clear. This step is critical for removing extra starch and other contaminants. – Dice the carrot and potato, then finely cut the green chile and ginger.
  • In a pressure cooker, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat.- Add cumin seeds and allow to sputter.
  • Next, add asafoetida, grated ginger, and green chile (if using).- Add the curry leaves and cook for a few seconds, until fragrant.
  • Combine the diced carrot, potato, and green peas. Sauté the veggies for 2–3 minutes.
  • Transfer the washed rice and moong dal to the cooker. Stir thoroughly to incorporate the spices and vegetables.
  • Combine turmeric powder and salt. Mix thoroughly to coat all ingredients with the spices.
  • Add 4 cups of water and whisk everything together.
  • Close the pressure cooker lid and cook over high heat until you hear two whistles. Then reduce the heat to low and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and let the pressure to dissipate naturally.
  • Once the pressure has been removed, cautiously open the lid.
  • Garnish and serve hot.
