How Sadhguru popularised Hatha Yoga

Taking the ancient practice of Yoga to the masses-How Sadhguru played a role?

The beauty of Yoga lays its ability to connect us with the Universe’s rhythm. Every form of Yoga is a different specialty and focuses on using different mediums.

One of the most popular forms of Yoga today is Hatha Yoga, made even more popular in the millenniums by Sadhguru. Sadhguru is the founder of Isha Foundation, Coimbatore. More commonly, he is a social media star whose videos are known for his sassy nature and the knowledge he imparts. From authoring books to discussing his spiritual journey, Sadhguru single-handedly reignited the fame of Yoga in Indian as well as Western culture. His videos are full of wisdom and have allowed us to learn more about this ancient practice and how we can use it in the modern day to our benefit.

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha yoga typically involves using physical postures (asanas) and breathing techniques (pranayama). Flexibility and core strength also develop with this form of Yoga. In simple terms, it is anything that uses the body, breath, and mind. It also brings back the focus on the self, making meditation an essential practice in this form of Yoga. The ability to hold the posture and maintain stillness of mind and body is vital in Hatha Yoga. As you put your body in complex poses and maintain mindfulness at the same time, the goal of Hatha Yoga is achieved.

‘Ha’ means sun, and ‘ta’ means moon; together, it means to bring balance between the sun and moon in our body.

Hatha Yoga allows us to take our body to higher possibilities and enable energy flow in our system. It prepares our body for a higher state of consciousness. Just as our body changes posture according to our feelings, the change of body postures can also elevate how we feel. Further, this proves that our mind and body are connected and often work together. To unlock a higher state of consciousness and achieve our highest potential, the mind and body must work in a ‘union.’ The word “Yoga” also means union.

Additionally, Hatha Yoga is great for beginners. It often forms the base of what is usually taught in Yoga classes, as it does not need any level of expertise.

Benefits of Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga can help improve and maintain the body’s physical agility. It stimulates blood flow and helps in cell repair and regeneration. It gives a younger look to the body and clears impurities from the system.

Besides the obvious physical benefits, it also has mental benefits. It helps calm us, relieves anxiety, and balances heightened emotions. Additionally, it improves concentration and if practiced correctly, it can help us become more conscious and aware.

And like everything in life, Hatha Yoga, too, requires practice and dedication. One cannot achieve mastery in a few sessions nor see any benefit. Yoga is a lifestyle, not just a form of exercise. We need to make it a part of our life to see the wonders it can help us achieve.
