One World News, recently grabbed a wonderful opportunity to interact with the model turned actress, Simran Kaur Mundi. She was crowned ‘Femina Miss India Universe’ in 2008 and later went onto make her acting debut in the rom-com Jo Hum Chahein (2011). It has not been a long journey for her but indeed filled with vigour and surprises.
The friendly and chirpy twenty-five years old actress Simran carries a happy-go-lucky attitude and knows how to enjoy life. She says, “I love to spend time with my family and my co-actors on the sets.” Simran has done her schooling from the prestigious boarding school Scindia Kanya Vidyalaya in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. She misses her school life and then the time that she spent at her hostel in New Delhi. Read on to know more…
What is it about Delhi that you like the most?
I like Dilli ka lehza, i.e. the way in which people pronounce words, like colony becomes kalony and character becomes karakter (laughs). It was in Delhi, where I learnt the meaning of the word jhand, as in Mumbai, the word for the same was waat lagna. (She made this reference as her next film is titled- Kuku Mathur ki Jhand Ho Gayi).
In most of the movies, your reel and real name is the same. Any special motive behind it?
I am way too much attached to my name to let it go for any other reel name. I remember when Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaenge (DDLJ) was released, I was unhappy with the fact that nearly all toddler girls then were named Simran. I even cried on one of the sets where the co-actress was to play a character named Simran.
How did you transform from being a no-one to someone?
In the beginning I was not interested in modelling. The offer to walk the ramp came in as a surprise to me. It was more like one day, you are a free soul and the very next day, you become a renowned figure. All of a sudden, I became conscious of what I was speaking and how was I carrying myself. I realised that there were girls who were following my dressing sense and fashion style. However, I decided once I am here, there is no turning back.
How compatible are you with the dialogues in regional films?
Yes, this becomes quite troublesome at times as I have acted in movies of different languages like in Bollywood (Hindi), Punjabi and Telugu. Since Punjabi is my mother-tongue, I always wanted to act in a Punjabi movie. I was under the wrong impression that I have a good command over it. I made a lot of mistakes on the sets but thanks to Roshan (singer and co-actor, Roshan Prince in Mundeyan Ton Bachke Rahin) that I got to learn more about the language. As far as Telugu movies are concerned, my dialogues are mostly dubbed there. I am somehow able to comprehend it, but I am still slow with its pronunciation.
What type of roles do you want to play?
I would love to play characters like Geet (KareenaKapoor) of Jab We Met and Rani (Kangana Ranaut) of Queen. In fact, Kangana Ranaut is my role model. From Fashion to Queen, she has been brilliant in all her performances.
What is your fitness mantra?
Salads and fruits occupy most of my time. In addition to this, I also run, jog and maintain a healthy diet schedule throughout.
