Chhagan Bhujbal emphasizes development, dismisses poll challenges, and defends alliance with Ajit Pawar-led NCP
Nashik: Veteran OBC leader and Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal, representing the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has distanced himself from the BJP’s divisive poll slogan Batenge toh katenge . Bhujbal expressed confidence in the ruling Mahayuti alliance’s chances of retaining power with a strong majority in the upcoming state elections.
In an interview in Yevla, Bhujbal emphasized his commitment to development. “Vikas is my caste, religion, and language. I only talk about development,” he said. Bhujbal dismissed concerns that the ongoing Maratha quota agitation, led by activist Manoj Jarange Patil, would impact the polls in Yevla and Manmad-Nandgaon constituencies, where his nephew Sameer Bhujbal is contesting.

Bhujbal highlighted his development initiatives, including the Manjarpada water diversion project, which has improved irrigation and benefited local farmers. He believes these efforts will help him secure a larger victory margin than his 60,000-vote win in the last election.
The 77-year-old politician criticized NCP founder Sharad Pawar, accusing him of breaking political parties and families over decades. Bhujbal, a former Shiv Sainik who joined Congress under Pawar’s guidance, defended his decision to align with Ajit Pawar in July 2023. “Sharad Pawar himself set the trend of breaking parties,” Bhujbal said, recalling Pawar’s role in toppling governments and forming alliances.

On the Mahayuti’s chief ministerial candidate, Bhujbal said the decision would be made after the elections. The Mahayuti alliance includes the BJP, Ajit Pawar’s NCP, and the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Polling for Maharashtra’s 288 assembly seats will be held on November 20, with results announced on November 23. Bhujbal is seeking a fifth consecutive term from Yevla, a constituency he has represented since 2004.
