Violence in Rajasthan’s Deoli-Uniara by-poll as candidate Naresh Meena arrested after clash with police
Major violence erupted in Rajasthan’s Tonk district on Monday, involving independent candidate Naresh Meena and police forces in the Deoli-Uniara by-poll. The clashes led to Meena’s arrest after tensions escalated in Samravata village, where he allegedly assaulted a government official at a polling station.
The incident began when Naresh Meena reportedly slapped Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Amit Chaudhary. Caught on camera, the footage showed Meena grabbing Chaudhary by the collar and slapping him twice. Meena claimed that the SDM tampered with votes by adding three extra ballots, which he said led to the confrontation. The video quickly spread online, fueling public reaction.

After the altercation, Meena’s supporters gathered and began clashing with the police, turning the area into a scene of chaos. Police moved to arrest Meena, but his followers resisted, throwing stones and setting vehicles on fire. Eight police vehicles and more than 20 motorcycles were burned during the protest, with fires also lit on a nearby state highway as supporters blocked roads in protest.
To arrest Meena and restore order, a large police team led by Tonk Superintendent of Police Vikas Sangwan was sent to the scene. Officers in full riot gear prepared to secure the area amid the heavy resistance from Meena’s supporters. Before his arrest, Meena declared to the media that he would not surrender and urged his followers to continue resisting the police.

The standoff ended after hours of tense operations. Police successfully arrested Naresh Meena, and his supporters were eventually subdued. Inspector-General Om Prakash later confirmed that, alongside Meena, 60 others were arrested for their roles in the violent clashes and acts of arson.
Naresh Meena, formerly with the Congress Party, chose to run independently after his party selected another candidate, Kastor Chand Meena, for the Deoli-Uniara seat. Despite his suspension, he continued his campaign with backing from the Bharat Adivasi Party.
The Deoli-Uniara constituency, which falls within the Tonk Lok Sabha area, is of strategic importance and is strongly influenced by Congress leader Sachin Pilot. The recent violence highlights the growing stakes in this region as the by-poll approaches.
