To increase women’s safety in public and commercial settings, the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission has put forth a number of innovative initiatives.. These suggestions were discussed in a recent meeting held on October 28 in Lucknow, as reported . The proposals include having female security personnel on school buses, requiring female staff in women’s clothing stores, and restricting men from specific roles in gyms, yoga sessions, and tailoring.

One of the key ideas is to bar male tailors from taking women’s measurements in Uttar Pradesh, and similarly, to restrict men from training women in gyms and yoga classes. The aim is to create safer and more comfortable environments for women by ensuring female trainers and staff are present in these spaces. The commission believes these steps could reduce potential risks and enhance security for women in public settings.

According to Maneesha Ahlawat, a member of the commission, the proposals are still in the early stages. The feasibility of these measures is being reviewed, and once they are finalized, they will be sent to the government for policy development and implementation.

In some districts of Uttar Pradesh, however, preliminary actions have already begun. In Shamli, District Probation Officer Hamid Hussain has directed local businesses to start adopting some of these safety guidelines. New rules now require school buses to have female security guards or teachers on board, and women’s gyms, yoga, and drama centers to appoint female trainers. Hussain has also recommended installing CCTV cameras in these facilities, as well as in boutiques and stores selling women’s clothing, to monitor activities and enhance safety.

Coaching centers in Shamli are now required to have CCTV surveillance and provide proper restroom facilities for women. Boutiques must hire female staff to take measurements of women, and clothing stores should employ female assistants to help customers.

Local social worker Veena Agrawal praised these steps, calling them crucial for creating safer spaces for women.

In a related move, in September, Haryana Police launched a real-time tracking feature on WhatsApp, allowing women to share their live location with the police. This service, reviewed by DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, helps women, particularly those traveling alone at night, feel safer by allowing the police to monitor their location in real-time.
