Asserting that India has always been a multicultural and diverse nation, Pranab Mukherjee the President of India has warned against bringing ‘uniformity’ in the society as it could further prove to be ‘disastrous’.
President said that, India is a multicultural, multiracial, multilingual nation and it celebrates its diversity.
India does not try to bring uniformity because that can be most disastrous to the country’s social progress.

President was attending the 202nd birth anniversary celebrations of the great Nepali poet Bhanubhakta Acharya at Chowrasta, Darjeeling, where the President stated that the poet has composed poems in Nepali but his message is for the entire humanity.
While praising the people of Darjeeling that have nurtured different cultures and identities, Mr. Mukherjee stated that unity in diversity is India’s strength.
He also complimented the efforts of the State government, who have always supported different cultures and he called upon the different communities to further work with one common purpose and contribute to the development of the region.
These statements from President came in the wake of the debates over the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the country.
