Stray Dog Census in South Delhi

Starting from Saturday, the stray dogs of South Delhi will be now counted in a census – the first such exercise in about seven years.

The erstwhile unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi had earlier conducted a dog census in the year 2009, when Delhi was preparing for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Stray Dog Census in South Delhi

For the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, this two-month exercise which is starting on Saturday will be the first dog census since it had been formed in 2012.

The director of the Veterinary Department of the SDMC, R.B.S. Tyagi, said that the census will be conducted by the Humane Society International (HSI).

Two experts, Dr. Amit Chaudhari of the HIS and Dr. Lex Hiby from the U.K., will be joined by a team of eight volunteers, who will further conduct the census from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. daily. Dr. Chaudhari said the census will be given the numbers of sterilised dogs, lactating female dogs and puppies, which will also help in assessing the SDMC’s dog sterilisation programme.
