VK Sasikala found guilty of corruption by the Supreme Court


Supreme Court has found VK Sasikala guilty of corruption and she has been sentenced to four years in prison. The verdict of Supreme Court has shattered all her hopes of becoming the state Chief Minister. The court has even barred her from contesting elections for next ten years.

The verdict that came on a 21- year –old case also involved Sasikala’s mentor and Tamil Nadu’s former Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha whose death in December sparked the power tussle in Tamil Nadu.
Notably, Sasikala was not present at the sentencing in New Delhi. She has been asked immediately surrender to police to begin serving her sentence.

The news came as shock for her supporters who wanted to see her as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. According to reports, more than 200 anti- riot police were deployed at a seafront resort where Sasikala was present with the 120 lawmakers from her party.

AIADMK has 134 members and to win VK Sasikala needed 117 votes, and she had 120 supporters, but now after the verdict all her hopes of becoming state Chief Minister has been shattered.

The verdict came on the fact that Ms. Jayalalitha misused her office to accrue 60 crores of assests in a shared fortune with VK Sasikala during her first term.

Notably, in 2014, two women were sentenced jail in Bengaluru, where the case was first tried. After being acquitted from the Karnataka Court Amma resumed her office.

The opposition party has hailed the verdict as historical. The Court has also handed a four- year prison term to Sasikala’s nephew and niece who were also involved with Amma and Sasikala in this corruption case.
