Patan, Gujarat: Police have filed an FIR against 15 second-year students of GMERS Medical College, Dharpur, after an 18-year-old first-year student, Anil Methaniya (Patel), allegedly died due to ragging in Gujarat. The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the boys’ hostel.

According to the FIR filed by additional dean Dr. Anilkumar Bhatija, first-year students were forced to sing, dance, and endure verbal abuse for over three hours during an “introduction” session organized by their seniors. Anil was reportedly made to stand for this duration, after which he felt dizzy, collapsed, and died during treatment in gujarat.
The session began around 8:30 PM on November 16 in the common room on the second floor of the hostel in gujarat. The FIR, lodged at Balisana police station early Monday, states that the accused second-year students assembled first-years and subjected them to prolonged ragging.

When this information reached to the Dean, hardik patel, he convened an anti-ragging committee in gujarat. Statements were recorded from 26 witnesses, including 11 who testified in person. The committee’s investigation revealed that 15 students were directly involved in Gujarat. Their confessions matched the accounts of the victims.
The accused have been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 127(2) (wrongful confinement), and 189(2) (unlawful assembly).
The college administration has suspended all 15 accused students from both hostel and academic activities in Gujarat.
“After Anil fainted, the seniors dispersed. The dean was immediately informed, and first-years gave written statements detailing the abuse they faced,” the FIR states.
This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about the enforcement of anti-ragging measures in educational institutions in Gujarat. College authorities and police have vowed strict action to ensure justice for the victim and prevent such incidents in the future.
Anil Methaniya hailed from Jesda village in Surendranagar district and was pursuing his first year in MBBS. Further investigation is underway.
