Mamata Banerjee’s government to gift saplings for every new born girl in Bengal
The Mamata Banerjee government, which is currently ruling in West Bengal, has devised a new strategy, in order to raise awareness about the environment and also for the need to save the girl child.
The government has now decided to gift saplings to the families of every newborn girl child in the state.
“We came up with this very innovative scheme to raise the awareness about the girl child. We will gift a sapling to the parents of every newborn girl in the state. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has herself named to this project ‘Sabujshree’. The child’s parents would also be further urged to name the sapling on the name of their newborn girl,” informed State Forest Minister Binay Krishna Barman.

The forest department has planned to distribute the saplings at the time the mother and her child get released from the various state-run hospitals after the delivery.
The forest department is working closely with the chief medical health officer’s (CMHO) of every district and also the Superintendents of government run hospitals for a smooth implementation of the project.
Officials said they have an aim to achieve two goals at the same time – create awareness about the environment and another to teach the importance of planting trees, in order to nurture the environment just as they nurture their girl child.
According to the minister, this project will boost the government’s forestation drive as estimated 15 lakh saplings are estimated to be distributed across the state.
