India might surge to wheat imports in a history of a decade
The plunging rains and hail storms can force the country to import, its chief producing crop wheat first time in a span of 10 years.
The industry body ASSCOHAM described the condition worse and extremely vulnerable for wheat production. It further added that the stocks are depleting at a steep rate and an alarming situation has come forth for the country.
Stocks at government granaries will drop to 13.4 million tones on April 1, 2016, when the new marketing year begins, down 22 percent from a year earlier, ASSOCHAM estimated.
Untimely and irregular showers have crippled the mature crops in states of Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
Farm Minister Radha Mohan Singh mentioning his concern said that he would assess the damage done in two or three weeks.
