India in Talks to Acquire Russia’s Advanced Voronezh Radar System for Enhanced Defence

India plans to acquire Russia’s Voronezh radar system to enhance air defence and missile detection

India is in talks with Russia to acquire the Voronezh radar system to strengthen air defence

India is in discussions with Russia to secure a $4 billion deal for the advanced Voronezh long-range radar system. This deal would significantly strengthen India’s air defence capabilities and missile detection. Reports suggest that the deal could be finalized soon, following Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s recent visit to Russia.

The Voronezh radar system, manufactured by Russia’s Almaz-Antey Corporation, is capable of detecting objects up to 8,000 kilometres away. It can track over 500 targets simultaneously, including ballistic missiles and stealth aircraft. Russia has been using this system since 2012, gradually replacing older Soviet-era radar systems. The radar is being upgraded with new technology that operates across various frequency bands, enabling it to track objects in air and near-space environments.

India is reportedly keen on acquiring the Voronezh radar to boost its air defence. Indian defence officials and representatives from Almaz-Antey are in advanced stages of negotiations. A Russian delegation visited India in November to meet local partners, and it’s expected that 60% of the system will be produced in India, in line with the Make in India initiative. The radar system is planned to be installed in Chitradurga, Karnataka.

The acquisition of the Voronezh radar is crucial for India’s security. It will help India detect and counter air and missile threats from China and other regional adversaries. The system plays a vital role in missile warning, working alongside Russian satellites to track missile launches and provide crucial data for interception.

Former Indian Air Force Vice Chief, Air Marshal Anil Khosla, emphasized the importance of such advanced radar systems in maintaining strategic stability amid rising missile threats in the region. The radar’s ability to monitor both air and space objects also aligns with India’s growing space programme under ISRO, further enhancing India’s military and space capabilities.
