Gurgaon becomes Gurugram from today!
The Haryana government has decided to rename the district of Gurgaon to Gurugram, returning to an ancient description of a place identified with glitzy shopping malls, luxury apartments and offices of the state of the art.
The government said the decision was taken on the basis of an application filed by residents and politicians.
An official bulletin said Gurgaon owes its name to Guru Dronacharya, the guardian of the Pandavas in the Mahabharata.
It was said that the Pandavas endowed the people of Drona, and the area was later known as Guru Ka Gram (village teacher) before becoming Gurgaon. And from today it will be known as Gurugram.
