Fresh plea in SC on HC beef ban

Two fresh petitions have been filed on Monday in the Supreme Court, which challenged the Bombay high court order for upholding the ban on beef which was imposed by the state government through an enactment.

The pleas filed were by All India Jamiatul Quresh of Maharashtra and Delhi alleged that, the politics were being played on the issue of cow slaughtering.

They have also said that the petitioner organizations has respected cows and calves, but the members of Qureshi community be further allowed to slaughter bulls and bullocks that have crossed the age of 16 as they are further of no use to farmers.

Moreover, the Bombay high court had also upheld the beef ban imposed by the state with the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, further banning the slaughter of bulls and bullocks, besides cows.

The high court had said that the mere possession of the meat cannot invite any criminal action, while striking down the relevant sections of the Act.

Earlier, the SC had issued a notice to the Maharashtra government on a separate plea, which challenged the high court verdict which had held that mere possession of beef from animals slaughtered outside the state cannot invite criminal action.
