Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung has lifted ban on construction
In view of the loss of the income to daily wage labourers, the Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung has lifted the ban on construction activities in Delhi on Tuesday, which was imposed earlier this month to tackle severe air pollution levels.
This decision to lift ban on construction had been taken at a meeting, which was chaired by Jung to review the condition of air pollution in Delhi.
This meeting was a follow up to the one which was held on November 7 in which several strong measures were taken, in order to check pollution in Delhi.
The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) in the meeting has informed that it has recorded one third fall in the PM 10 levels, during the last two weeks and one fourth in PM 2.5 levels in the last two weeks.
PM 2.5 pollutants can further travel deeply into the respiratory tract down to the lungs and cause some serious health hazards.
Cumulative action had significant impact on pollution
Environmental expert Sunita Narain, who was also present in the meeting, said, “Cumulative action by all has had significant impact and pollution has come down considerably.”
Jung has instructed strict observation on the ban on the firecrackers during this ongoing marriage season. He has also said that the ban on Diesel Generating sets, which are included in marriages, shall continue.
In compliance with the ban on construction, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has till now issued 716 challans to violators, whereas the East DMC has issued 383 challans and generated the revenue of Rs 30 lakh.
Moreover, the North DMC has suspended one Junior Engineer for some wrong reporting and issued 19 challans to violators and generated Rs 11.5 lakh revenue.
During the meeting Special Commissioner Police (traffic) has mentioned that construction has been stopped at 539 sites and 29 cases have been further registered.
Both the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Supreme Court are also monitoring the situation of air pollution in Delhi and further their suggestions were taken up for discussion and implementation in the meeting.
The Lt. Governor asked all the concerned departments to keep up their efforts, and advised them to work out a plan to secure a long term solution to the issue of deteriorating air quality in Delhi.
