Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva recently faced health issues after taking a dip in the highly polluted Yamuna River, sparking a political clash with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders. The BJP leader reported breathing difficulties and skin rashes following his protest swim, which he staged to criticize the Delhi government’s handling of river pollution.

Sachdeva’s dip took place at a ghat near ITO, where he accused the AAP-led government of mismanaging funds meant for cleaning the Yamuna. Days later, he was admitted to Delhi’s RML Hospital, where doctors treated him for skin irritation and prescribed a three-day course of medication. BJP’s Delhi unit confirmed Sachdeva’s hospitalization, criticizing former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his “unfulfilled promise” to clean the Yamuna by 2025.

In response, AAP’s senior leader and Environment Minister Gopal Rai dismissed Sachdeva’s actions as drama, accusing the BJP of using the issue to score political points. According to Rai, the BJP was exaggerating the pollution problem in an attempt to gain public sympathy.

During his protest, Sachdeva challenged AAP leaders, including current Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Kejriwal, to inspect the river’s condition themselves. He added a symbolic element to his protest by setting up a red carpet near the Yamuna ghat, referencing the residence known as Sheesh Mahal, which Kejriwal used during his time as chief minister. Sachdeva emphasized his challenge by arranging two chairs, claiming it was in line with AAP leader Atishi’s alleged preference for special seating arrangements.

Sachdeva also called on Kejriwal to account for the ₹8,500 crore that he said was allocated by the central government to clean up the Yamuna. His remarks suggested frustration with the perceived lack of progress on the project and blamed AAP’s leadership for what he described as corruption and fund mismanagement.

This recent incident has further intensified the ongoing tension between the BJP and AAP, with both sides trading blame over Delhi’s pollution crisis and Yamuna’s deteriorating condition
