After rationalist MM Kalburgi was brutally murdered, it is suspected by right wing fanatics, Indian writers decided to take up cudgels on his behalf. Kalburgi was himself a eminent writer, and winner of Sahitya Akademi award.
After the Akademi remained silent on his murder, writers started to mark their protest by returning awards conferred on them by this august body.
So far eminent writers like Ashok Vajpeyi, Nayantara Sahgal, Ganesh Devy, Aman Sethi, Gurbachan Bhullar, Ajmer Singh Aulakh, Atmajit and others have returned the Akademi awards conferred on them, and it looks like more are to follow.
