Spain first proposed World Radio Day in September 2010. In November 2011, the UNESCO member states accepted the proposal unanimously by backing broadcasting associations worldwide. The first World Radio Day was celebrated on February 13, 2012.
The theme for the day
The theme for the 12th edition of World Radio Day is “Radio and Peace”. On World Radio Day 2023, UNESCO highlights independent radio as a pillar for conflict-prevention and peace building. Promoting and encouraging the use of the radio is the goal of the day.
Importance of Radio
Every year this day is celebrated by undertaking activities like changing the theme. Still, they always relate to something socially conscious, and the national, regional, and international broadcasting associations come along to celebrate various events.
The radio has been with us longer than any other broadcast media, and it does not need electricity or the internet to be connected. World Radio Day ensures this coverage will continue with the best quality programming.
Radio has remained the most resilient and far-reaching communication medium in this digital world.
During the Covid pandemic, radio as a medium made it possible to ensure continuity of learning, fight against miscommunication and promote barrier gestures.
In India, the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Mann ki Baat” proves the importance of radio as a communication medium.
