History

The idea of world mental health day was first observed in the year 1992, this started with the support of world federation for mental health and welfare (WFMH). This aimed at creating awareness on common issues with regards to mental health and inform the public about the need to embrace mental health. At first, there was no theme for this day, nevertheless, in 1994, for the first time the theme was set, which concerned world mental health.

Since then the themes have included and not limited to, mental health especially in the working places, concerning issues affecting youths and need to eliminate stigma of mental health illness. World Mental Health Day 2024 remains strategic also on supporting the efforts aimed at minimization of stigma, improving actual availability of mental health services, and improving mental well-being in population. This day is very important in bringing out these gaps.
