World Heritage Day 2025: Celebrating 60 Years of ICOMOS and Protecting Global Monuments from Disasters and Conflicts
World Heritage Day-the International Day for Monuments and Sites-it celebrates on every April 18. Thus, a global reminder has been created regarding the fact that cultural legacies must be preserved. Day motivates individuals, communities, and governments to consider making efforts on the historical sites that have their significance in current society and take action to preserve these legacies for generations to come. Appreciating these monuments is also part of giving honor to our past as it teaches us what to build into a shared responsibility and identity.
Since 1983, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) has carried on celebrating the day in different themes every year. For the year 2025, the title theme is “Heritage under Threat from Disasters and Conflicts: Preparedness and Learning from 60 Years of ICOMOS Actions.” Focus this year is on awareness raising about the vulnerability of cultural heritage amidst natural calamities, wars, or emergencies due to climatic changes
For six decades, ICOMOS has been at the forefront of heritage protection. Their 60th milestone will be in 2025, offering the opportunity to look back at past efforts as well as the challenges at hand. From emergency response strategizing to planning restoration and preservation projects, ICOMOS continues to lead initiatives that prepare communities to face risks while minimizing damage to invaluable cultural sites.
