Celebrating Urban Wildlife Conservation Day!
Urban Wildlife Conservation Day is celebrated on second Saturday of October, in order to increase awareness of the need to protect the species which reside in urban environments. If population continues to increase and open spaces continue to decrease as we see in large metropolitan areas, birds, squirrels, raccoons, foxes, and so many more are now Roof Dwellers. This day is to make people understand that conservation is not only for the restricted areas like forests or parks for wild animals but also for urban regions also.
DN: Due to increased urban development as has been characteristic of development in the last few decades there is increased fragmentation and loss of habitats for wildlife. But current population density is not a problem for animals because they are adaptable and always can make it, even in cities.
Individuals or businesses who have even the smallest amount of property can get involved with Urban Wildlife Conservation Day by considering how to better use their natural space.
Re-wild areas of the city by eliminating the use of pesticides, letting “weeds” grow, taking back abandoned parking spaces, or even adding a rooftop wild space.
People, communities and governments are urged to join the celebration of Urban Wildlife Conservation Day with an aim of maintaining these animals in their natural habitat enabling them to live side by side with humans.

Another relevant issue of the study of urban wildlife is the question of habitat development, or the lack thereof, in the form of parks, gardens, and nature preserves, within cities. These areas are also important in that they act as source of food, shelter and breeding places for most of species. Some things as tree planting, leaving native vegetation un-sprayed, and proper disposal of waste go long way in helping urban wildlife.
Urban conservation’s strength relies on education and awareness. Citizenship can be achieved through public awareness of the various species within their environment and the effects of their activities on the same environment. For instance, not letting pets run free, not feeding wildlife and using structures like bird feeders or bat houses all in a way promote healthier wildlife populations.
Today is the Urban Wildlife Conservation Day and we should admit the existence of various animals in cities and try to preserve their living environment. When you make cities more wildlife friendly, you are ensuring the wildlife and the humans have a future world.
