Biography: The Life and Legacy of Abdul Kalam
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is arguably one of India’s most revered scientists and President having been honored with the title “People’s President. He was born on 15-10-1931 at Rameswaram Tamil Nadu and he was poor man’s son who worked hard and was keen to learn. However the mode of study shocked the Kalam family because he had limited resources and yet he was determined to study physics and aerospace engineering to become known as India’s “Missile Man”.

Kalam started his career in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he was involved in the design of the satellite launch vehicle-III SLV-III, which put the Rohini satellite into orbit in 1980. He made his mark in missile development when he was with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and his leadership in nuclear technology sealed it. More notably he made the Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998 was a crucial turning point in India’s defense system.

Finally in 2002 Kalams was elected as the 11th president of India. Modest was how he was and most of the public found affection with him particularly students where he encouraged to embrace their dream and work hard. APJ Abdul Kalam was compassionate as a leader, involving youths, science and innovation as the key aspects of leadership. He was given a nickname ‘People’s President’ because he was easily approachable and much like the society.
Post presidency, Kalam served his cause to educate the young generation by delivering speeches, writing books and also engaged himself in projects related to improving Indian countryside. Some of the books include Wings of Fire and Ignited Minds are written based on his perception of developed India.
