Flu cases in Delhi-NCR are rising sharply. Know the symptoms, risks, and essential safety precautions to stay protected.

Delhi-NCR Sees Surge in Flu Cases: Symptoms, Risks, and Prevention Tips

Delhi-NCR has recently been experiencing a considerable rise in flu cases. The H1N1 virus is particularly affecting the swine flu population. A survey by LocalCircles finds that flu symptoms like fever, sore throat, cough, headache, stomach flu, joint pain, and respiratory discomfort are being manifested by at least one person in 54% of the studied households. This sudden influx of cases to hospitals is putting a strain on the system and is worrying health practitioners as well as the general public.

In light of the similar clinical presentation of H1N1 and COVID-19, the misdiagnosis and potential delay in treatment seem to be the two most troublesome concerns facing most of the population. There is a steep rise in cases being recorded in hospitals, where patients suffer from high-grade fever, cough lasting for many days, body ache, and throat infection. Experts have warned that this season, the flu cases appear to be quite bad and are lasting longer, with many patients experiencing wheezing, chest congestion, and difficulty breathing. The current strains are lingering for about ten days, unlike previous years, when flu symptoms would resolve in five to seven days.

Understanding H1N1 Influenza

The swine flu, H1N1 influenza, is highly contagious, having been spread first from pigs to humans and now transmitted among the humans. It manifests signs and symptoms that are similar to those of the seasonal flu: fever, cough, sore throat, body ache, fatigue, chills, and in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea. In serious cases, it can lead to pneumonia or acute respiratory distress, hence a big reason for its being a health threat.

How to Stay Safe from H1N1 Flu

If you are in an area where H1N1 cases are abundant, this calls for precautions to be taken so as to avoid infection. Here are a few safety measures to be followed:
• Vaccination against Flu: Getting the yearly influenza vaccine offers the best defence against H1N1 and other viral illness.
• Hygiene: Reguarly wash with the soap and water or sanitizer after touching public surfaces.
• Refrain from touching face: The virus can spread by the mouth, nose or eye after contact with an infected surface.
• Use a mask: Wearing an effective mask (N95 or higher quality) while in crowded areas or in areas of poor ventilation reduces the risk of inhaling droplets that may be contaminated.
• Cough in an appropriate manner: Use tissue or bend your elbow to cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and dispose of tissues responsibly.
• Disinfect of high-touch surfaces: Clean frequently touched items with a disinfectant, such as doorknobs, phone screens, and keyboards.
• Avoid Close Contact: Make a point of keeping a distance from any persons displaying flu-like symptoms in order to lessen your chance of contracting the illness.
• Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water supports overall health and keeps the respiratory system functioning properly.
Thus, with flu cases rising, we should remain alert; following up on these precautionary methods aims to safeguard oneself and others against infections.
