Outdoor Plant Selection: Tips for Selecting the Best Outdoor Plants

The way we apply our knowledge before buying anything, in the same way purchase of outdoor plants too requires inspection and knowledge so that the right kind is taken.

Outdoor Plant Selection: Factors you need to consider before picking up plants for a serene and green ambiance at your place

During the warm season, many homeowners will visit plant stores online and physically, looking to purchase plants. It is important to choose the right cultivar and species of a plant matching soil, sun, winter hardiness and water requirements. Besides, outdoor plants might have different requirements compared to indoor plants. Additionally, you must select plants that are of high quality regardless of where they will be placed. This article offers a comprehensive guide on tips for selecting the best outdoor plants.

Consider the Quality and Condition

When purchasing outdoor plants, you must ensure they are of high quality and in the best possible condition. The plant must not be dropping, or missing leaves, and the leaves should not be mottled or discolored. However, minor spots or a few brown leaf edges should not bother you, especially for plants growing in containers. This is because they are usually under a lot of stress; thus, such defects might be avoidable. But do not compromise, plants will suffer extreme leaf damage.

Evaluate Form and Habit

Typically, an outdoor plant’s overall form or habit should be well-balanced. This means it must not be too small or too big for the container. Look for trees having well-spaced branches without double leaders. Vegetable, annuals and perennial transplants should be compact, robust and sturdy. Not that bigger is not always better. Lanky and spindly plants, especially vegetables and annuals, will not transplant properly.

Check for Weeds, Diseases and Insects

Before making any purchase, inspecting the plants for any symptoms or signs of diseases or insects is best. You do not want to bring a new plant into your compound that will spread disease and pests to the existing plants.

Check near the crown of the plants or under the leaves, and avoid buying plants with disease or insect infestation signs. On the other hand, do not buy plants with many weeds alongside the plant. If transplanted, the weeds might become an issue in your outdoor space. And they might spread to the point that you cannot control them.

Inspect the Root System

Even though it can be challenging, the root system is one of the most important things to evaluate in an outdoor plant. You can slip down the plant pot to check the roots, which should be white and firm, not brown and mushy. Again, there should not be an extreme amount of circling roots in the container as it could lead to issues in future, especially for shrubs and trees.

Your plant should not have excessive roots coming from the bottom of the pot. This is a sign that the plant has been in the container for an extended period. Consequently, do not purchase recently bumped plants, as the soil may not be firm enough to hold around the plant.
