World Liver Day 2025: Recognizing Early Signs of Liver Disease and Embracing the Theme ‘Food is Medicine’ for a Healthier Future

Liver diseases are usually neglected in the early stages, which is why World Liver Day falls on April 19 every year to raise awareness about these diseases. The liver, one of the most essential organs, has various functions determinant of health in the human body. It filters toxins, aids digestion, stores energy, and plays a part in regulating the immune system. However, if the liver is working inappropriately, it can cause large health problems. The focus on World Liver Day 2025 is ‘Food is Medicine,’ directing attention toward how good diets can assist in the prevention of liver diseases.

Real reasons for strain on the liver include poor dietary habits and too much alcohol, but one can get it directly because of stress. Symptomatology could be present, but often it’s not until later when the liver begins to fail that symptoms reveal themselves. If major liver problems are to be avoided, early recognition is paramount. Here are the eight key signs:

Fatigue: It’s common but mostly overlooked; it can reflect people through the dysfunctional liver mis-functioning. Even with sufficient rest, the liver’s inability to do the job correctly may result in feeling drained most times.

Jaundice: A major yellow tint seen in the skin and whites of the eyes, jaundice occurs as a result of the difficulty that the liver has in processing bilirubin; thus, it accumulates in the bloodstream as this yellow substance.

Dark or Light Stools: The stool color changes as a result of changes in bile production or bile flow problems. Very dark or pale stools may be indicative of liver problems.

Pain or a Feeling of Distension in the Upper Right Abdomen: Pain develops on the upper right side of the abdomen when there is inflammation, swelling within the liver. Ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdomen) also could be indicative of liver disease.

Nausea or Vomiting: While nausea and vomiting may be caused by many problems, if they last without a clear cause, they may be related to liver distress.

Bleeding or Bruising Easily: The liver makes essential proteins for blood clotting. When it is damaged, the individual bled easily or brusised.

Pruritic or Itchy Skin: Itching, especially when it manifests itself without any rash, could be attributed to bile salts building up under the skin, indicative of dysfunctional liver.

Swelling of Legs or Ankles: In serious liver disease, fluid builds in the feet or ankles.
