Pablo Picasso’s painting named ‘Les femmes d’Alger “version O” was sold at auction for $179, 365, 000. It was sold by Christie’s New York. The painting is of a woman baring her top against the background of angles and the description that forms a room with a painting in a painting theme. This sale tops the list of the highest price ever paid for a work of art by an artist. A sculpture by Giacometti titled ‘Pointing Man’ was also included in the same sale. The highest price paid prior to this was, two years before for Francis Bacon’s “Three Studies of Lucian Freud”.

2. Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog – $58, 405, 000

‘Balloon Dog’ made out of polished orange stainless steel and standing at 12 feet height by artist Jeff Koons’ was sold at an auction at Christie’s for $58, 405,000. This was an instance of highest-paid work-of-art for a living artist of contemporary art. Koons took 6 years to complete this ‘masterpiece’ from 1994 to 2000. It has been made in four other versions in magenta, yellow, red and blue.

3. Blue Moon 12 Carat Diamond  – $48,500,000

The Blue moon 12 Carat Diamond is the third most expensive item ever sold at an auction with a price tag of $48,500,000. The flawless stone was mounted on a ring weighed 12.03 carats and has a fancy vivid blue grade. Boron, found in structure makes the color of diamond blue. The raw stone was found in Cullinan mine near Pretoria in South Africa in 2014. The New York jeweler Cola International sold this diamond to Hong Kong magnate.

4. 63 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta   $38,000,000

A 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta was auctioned and sold at $38,000,000 on August 15th, 2014. At that time, it was the highest ever paid for a Ferrari or any car at that time. Bonhams auction sold the Jo Schlesser, a French-racing-driver’s Car whose estimated price was in the range of $30 million to $40 million.

5. 1993 Gold Double Eagle Coin  $7,600,000

The 1993 Gold Double Eagle Coin is the last to feature in our list of the most expensive items ever auctioned. Stack’s Numismatic and Sotheby’s Auction sold this for an amount of $7,600,000 in 2002. Theodore Roosevelt gave this idea as he wanted a US coin similar to the Greek’s coin of antiquity. However, because of the looming difficulties in the banking sector President Roosevelt ordered the coin to be melted down into gold bullion.
