Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati was born on 23rd December, 1824, in Tankara, Gujarat, India, as Mool Shankar. He was given the name Dayanand Saraswati after initiation by Swami Purnanand Saraswati and abandoned worldly life. All his lifetime work went towards eliminating social ills.

He also motivated freedom fighters such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Ram Prasad Bismil and Chandra Shekhar Azad, who became active participants in the Indian independence movement later on.
