Naga Sadhus worship Practices

The Naga Sadhus are strict Shaivite adherents. They meditate, practice yoga, and offer belpatra, water, and ash to the Shivling as their rituals. The fire and ash feature prominently in their religious ceremonies; they purify and help to bring them close to Lord Shiva. The essence of their life is renunciation, with the practice of celibacy and nudity as the expression of detaching themselves from the worldly bindings. The Naga Sadhus, guided by the teachings of Adi Shankaracharya, are trained for 12 years, with the first six years being the most influential.

Worship Practices of Aghori Sadhus

Aghori Sadhus follow a rather different path of worship. Their spiritual practices include Shiva Sadhana, Shav Sadhana, and Shamshan Sadhana. These practices sometimes include highly dramatic and ritualistic activities, including standing on one leg during worship or offering meat and liquor to Lord Shiva. Aghoris also worship Maa Kali and are Kapalika sects, staying in crematoriums and meditating over life’s impermanence. While Naga Sadhus tend to be very reclusive, they only occasionally come into public view and then mostly when there is an important religious gathering like the Maha Kumbh.

Lifestyle and Diet Differences

The Naga Sadhus are characterized by their austere life, which includes celibacy and self-discipline. They only eat once a day and take alms from seven households. If they are not successful in this, they starve. Aghoris, on the other hand, follow a more unconventional lifestyle. They often consume meat and alcohol during their rituals. They can be recognized by their ash-covered bodies, Rudraksha garlands, and human skulls that they carry.

Both Naga and Aghori Sadhus epitomize the extremes of commitment to their respective spiritual paths. The Naga Sadhus, in their path, focus on self-discipline and renunciation, while the Aghoris walk on the path of fearlessness and transcendence, thus demonstrating the rich tapestry of spiritual practices at Maha Kumbh.
