Karwa Chauth is one of the most eagerly anticipated and loved festivals in North India observed mainly by married women, who demonstrate loyalty and wifehood. The date of Karwa Chauth fasting this year will be October 20, 2024.

Date and Timings: The festival is celebrated on the fourth day from the day of Purnima or the full moon – in the month of Kartik as per the Purnimant calendar. However, in places that observe the Malayali calendar it is celebrated in the month of Ashwin but in some parts of Western and Southern India. Key timings for Karwa Chauth 2024 are as follows:

The Legend of Karwa Chauth: The most popular stories related to the Karwa Chauth are that of Queen Veeravati and the story of Karn as well. Added to this, as the girl begun her first act of fasting she became weaker, she even fainted due to hunger. Her brothers plotted against her and told her the moon was up in order to get her to break the fast. Unfortunately, after that, her husband passed away too. Devastated, Veeravati urged Goddess Parvati and the deity instructed her to continue the fast with determination. Blessedly though her husband regained consciousness making the movie a symbol of love and faith.
Rituals of Karwa Chauth: The day starts early as for the women who observe Karwa Chauth as one is allowed to eat only Sargi, which is prepared by mother – in – law. After this they have to go for a partial fast which means they do not eat or drink anything, till the appearance of the moon. In the evening, women come forward for Puja dressed in spectacular festive costumes that are brilliant, most preferably red as auspicious for married women. They offer water (Argha) to the moon using a clay pot (Karwa), which is later given to charity. The fast concludes when they sight the moon, and they break their fast while praying for the long life and well-being of their husbands.
