The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against “Women 2023” emphasizes that violence against women happens everywhere. Women experience different types of threats and fear from acts like domestic abuse, sexual violence and even murder around the world. Therefore, this must be one man’s army against all types of violence perpetrated against women. Struggle towards the eradication of such forms of violence has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic while disruption of services caused a high rate of violence.

History

This observance originated in 1979 when the UN General Assembly approved the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women. Nevertheless, reports of violence against women continued to occur. Some of them resulted in an action towards more publicity that also addressed policymaking to end such violence in 2008. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women has been celebrated by women´s rights activists starting from 1981 which is responsible for the development and promotion of a worldwide movement against gendered violence.

This year’s theme for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is appropriately called ‘UNITE!’ Invest to stop violence against women and girls.’ This underscores the imperative of providing funds towards prevention measures aimed at stemming incidences of GBV against women and girls. According to the UN Women’s official website, it’s a critical occasion for highlighting prevalent worldwide brutality towards ladies. It also serves as a platform to explore effective measures to end such violence and support survivors.
