Lala Lajpat Rai’s early years were marked by his quest for knowledge. He attended a government school in Hisar. He then enrolled in the Government College in Lahore. Initially, he went to law, but his deepening concern about the social and political condition of India made him shift to an activist and reform career. His early life was molded by the Indian circumstances of British colonialism, and it was from these that came his lifelong commitment to India’s freedom movement.

Role in the Indian National Movement: Freedom Fighter
Lajpat Rai was a key personality in the Indian National Congress and he himself played an important role in advocating for Indian Independence. He formed his political philosophy upon a vision of free India from the shackles of British rule. He was one of the active proponents of the Swadeshi movement which called for a boycott of foreign goods and Indian industries. His name along with Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal makes up the invincible “Lal-Bal-Pal” trio that clamored for an independent India.
He was much beyond a political worker. Lala Lajpat Rai aimed at arousing masses to respect self and nationality in the fight against foreign domination. His forceful speeches, his articles, his writings inspired and spurred the Indian populace against the colonial establishment.

The Dayanand Anglo-Vedic College founded by Lajpat Rai was in Lahore which aimed at modern education coupled with Indian thought and tradition.

Martyrdom: Sacrifice for Motherland
Lala Lajpat Rai lost his cause the activist that independence had in India by paying much personally. He marred the whole of his life because he was involved in several protests against the British government. In 1928, he led a peaceful protest against the Simon Commission formed without Indian representation. He was then beaten ruthlessly by the police and, although injured, continued his campaign of justice. He succumbed to injuries resulting from this police attack on November 17, 1928.
It was because of his martyrdom that things started changing at a large-scale in Indian Struggle for independence; Many were enthused to enhance the fight against the British Government at that point in time. Much later his killer was assassinated by one of his pupils- Bhagat Singh when a British police official responsible for this police assault died.
