Global Handwashing Day 2024: Understanding the Significance of Clean Hands, Exploring the Theme ‘Why Are Clean Hands Still Important?’ and Celebrating Hand Hygiene on October 15
Global Hand washing day is an event which is conducted on every 15th of October in a particular calendar year to remind people about the significance of washing hands. This day was created by the International organization called the Global Handwashing Partnership and its primary goal is focused on effective promotion of the proper hand washing all around the world, paying people’s attention to washing their hands with soap at the proper time.

Background- The first Global Handwashing Day event was in 2008 with over 120 million school children in more than 70 countries. This momentous occasion was perhaps helpful in increasing consciousness regarding the ease and efficacy of proper hand washing. Since then people at the community and national level have used this day to campaign for the erection of hand wash stations like sinks and tippy taps with the message of clean hands being key to health.

The Importance of Hand Washing- Through the celebration of Global Handwashing Day, most people are educated on the importance of washing their hands. ‘We Wash Our Hands’ endorsed by government departments, schools, NGOs and private institutions, to name but a few, offers information on how hand washing can combat the spread of contagious diseases. As public health enthusiasts, our AFHE theme this year ‘’Why clean hands are still relevant?’’ has been developed as a rallying.
