Enjoying Diwali? Learn the Dangers of Excessive Alcohol During the Festive Season

During the festive season, many of us enjoy Diwali with card parties and a bit more alcohol. However, it’s crucial to be aware that consuming too much alcohol in a short time can lead to alcohol poisoning. Dr. Sudha Desai from Ruby Hall Clinic explains that alcohol poisoning happens when your body is overloaded with alcohol, affecting vital functions like breathing, heart rate, and body temperature.

Dangers of Binge Drinking: A Life-Threatening Risk

Ekta Singhwal, a dietitian at Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, emphasizes that alcohol poisoning is a severe and life-threatening condition. The risk increases with binge drinking, which is consuming large amounts quickly. Dr. Desai notes that for men, having more than five drinks in two hours, and for women, more than four, is considered binge drinking. Dr Rahul Chirag from CARE Hospitals adds that a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or higher can also lead to poisoning for some.

Recognizing the signs of alcohol poisoning is crucial for prompt intervention. These signs include confusion, vomiting, seizures, slow breathing, hypothermia, and unconsciousness. Dr Desai warns that combining alcohol with opioids or sedative-hypnotics, like sleep aids or anxiety pills, increases the risk of overdose.

Swift Action: Alcohol Poisoning Response

If you suspect someone has alcohol poisoning, act quickly: call emergency medical assistance, stay with them, and encourage them to sit up if conscious. Don’t leave them alone, and if unconscious, turn them on their side to prevent choking. Avoid trying to “sober them up” with cold showers or drinks, as this won’t reverse alcohol poisoning and may worsen the situation.

After contacting emergency services, continue monitoring the person until professional help arrives. Provide details about the alcohol consumed. Medical attention may involve intravenous fluids, monitoring vital signs, and addressing complications like seizures or low blood sugar. Psychological support may be offered to address underlying issues contributing to excessive alcohol consumption.

Dr Desai emphasizes the dangers of mixing alcohol with over-the-counter antihistamines or illegal opiates like heroin. Combining alcohol with these substances increases the risk of overdosing. Stay safe during celebrations by being mindful of your alcohol intake and seeking help if needed.
