India celebrates Engineer’s Day every September 15 to celebrate the birth anniversary of Moksagundam Visvesvaraya. Also known as Sir MV, he is the builder of India, the builder of water systems, dams, and more. His efforts saved many people from floods and boosted irrigation facilities. He is remembered as an engineering pioneer in the country whose genius is reflected in building and consolidating dams and harnessing water resources.
Who was Moksagundam Visvesvaraya?
Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village of Karnataka and completed his schooling there before enrolling at the University of Madras for his bachelor’s degree. At the College of Science in Pune, he pursued a diploma in civil engineering.
In 1903, he patented and installed an irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune to raise food storage and supply.
During his tenure at Tata Steel, he also developed armoured, bullet-proof vehicles for World War II.
In 1955, M Visvesvaraya received India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. One of the intellectual brains of India died in 1962.
